06: Cate Ferris Gyroscope Launch

We are bursting with pleasure and pride to announce the launch of Gyroscope, the new album by musical wonder genius Cate Ferris. Cate is one of our core Miss Represented Artist Facilitators with a special focus on music, her extensive musical know-how, patience and determination all help to unlock the creative musical potential with the young women we support on the project.  She is a magician in action and somehow has encouraged some of our most anxious young women to sing and perform at numerous Miss Represented events including some of the staff!!

Cate has worked and collaborated with great musicians from a wide range of genres – Nick Menasseh, Martha Tilston, Aamouai, Alex Banks, Nordic Giants. She was lead vocalist and co-writer for Dizraeli & The Small Gods, an eclectic 8-piece hip-hop band, whose album Moving In The Dark was shortlisted for the 2014 Songlines Music Awards and she has performed on the West Holts Stage (Glastonbury), at the Royal Festival Hall, Latitude Festival, main-staging Larmer Tree and headlining at Purbeck Folk Festival to name but a few.

We consider ourselves enormously lucky to have her and salute her creativity, her love of life and the sisterhood she gives us all. Check out the album below… !

05: Virtual School Sessions

Hove Park School and Miss Represented have joined forces, and we are now running our Miss Represented schools programme online via the Zoom App.

The young women in the group have been amazing and have risen to  the challenge of connecting in this way. Being in lockdown at the start of Spring is hard for everyone – but especially hard for young people! Managing the frustrations of lockdown and the impact it can have on our mental health, it’s so important we care for ourselves  and each other. We know that art and creativity is one way of doing this, which is ace, and can really help us to keep positive and express ourselves.

Delivered by the spectacular Miss Rep Facilitators, Hannah and Evie!

The sessions are running weekly and we are exploring some brilliant stuff together: sharing films, drawing games, designing a poster for the NHS, and writing poetry.

Watch this space for new work appearing soon!

In the meantime, here are some of our helping hands we made for International Women’s Day last month. It feels particularly important now – we can’t physically link hands but we can still stay connected and inspired!

The hand activity was inspired by a group member’s love of using their hand as an expressive canvas most days.

03: Miss Rep Performs!

Miss Rep performs at the National Youth Workers Institute Conference!

“To say that it resonated with our delegation of youth workers is an understatement: This project offered a clear and congruent insight into the lives and circumstances of young women living through challenges”

Saturday 02 March, we made our way down to the Sallis Benney Theatre to do a presentation to lots of lovely youth workers.

We screened some of our documentary, performed extracts from our critically acclaimed show Can You See Me Now? Evie performed a new piece and Hope sang her beautiful song Just Me.   We ended on a Q&A.

Big ups to all the girls – Evie, Caitlin, Hope, Lorelei – and to Chanel who came to take photos but got roped into performing, which she did brilliantly. What a star!  And she still managed to get a few pics of us in rehearsals.

Thanks to Adam Muirhead and YWI for having us and for your kind words… onwards to our next conference…. Watch this space!

02: Can You See Me Now?

Miss Represented launches new documentary today!!

Miss Represented is a creative arts project working with young women, using the arts for personal development and social change.

In 2017 we took our cross-art show Can You See Me Now? out on tour.  It was epic, from beginning to end!

The making process involved our weekly get togethers of talking, creating, writing, singing, eating, talking some more, going to Embercombe for an amazing adventure and then seeing what common themes ideas and feelings were swimming around and emerging.

Turned out to be some political stuff; poverty, stigma, systems and institutions.  Personal stuff; real life experiences of being young, lost, hanging out in the streets, hating school. Social stuff; how society responds to those they don’t fully understand.   We had a brimming pool of original songs, spoken pieces, a group-written poem, films, ensemble pieces, all coming together to make a brand new cross-art show that was unapologetic, honest and real.

Can You See Me Now? revealed the experiences of the girls finding their way through life; stone-stepping through ‘controlled care’, confusing expectations, raging histories, lies, love and recovery.  It amplified voices you don’t normally hear and was presented authentically, with bravery and love.   We performed in Brighton’s schools, arts venues and Youth Centre.  We travelled further afield to London, Liverpool and Manchester. We met incredible people along the way who shared their own stories, their own courage, their own love.

Following us around was our trusty filmmaker and photographer Lauren Joy Kennett.  She has now made a documentary showing our journey, which you can watch below:

Miss Represented has been running for 7 years – there is much to celebrate as we look back over that time.  While you’re on our website discover, or re-discover, all our projects; see past photography exhibitions, view films, explore the different themes we have brought to life in past shows and all the creative work we have produced.

You can also discover extras such as our Satellite Sessions in schools which are co-facilitated by Miss Rep alumni, Caitlin and Evie, as well as their super inspiring Park Life campaign – these girls are going places!

There is lots to look at and hear!!

Follow us on facebook and insta to be kept up to date.

We also have a brand new YouTube channel with music videos and all sorts!

Please feel free to spread the word about our documentary and, more generally, the importance of this kind of work – the power of community and the arts.  We are stronger together.

Much love,

Miss Represented.

Big thanks to the Big Lottery Fund, The John Thaw Foundation and all our other supporters.

01: Hope

holding hands friendship performance

Our recent performance at The Basement in Brighton inspired bright dewy eyes along with smiles of pleasure in the audience. A new generation of women revealed their thoughts, fears and social commentary; it was almost impossible for the audience not to be moved by such strong voices, soaring beautifully in song, and sharing stories.

Along with live performance was the preview of our new documentary about our tour of Can You See Me Now? , which will be launching online the week of 7th Jan.

As if that all wasn’t enough, we were also super happy to look back over the last seven years of Miss Represented as we celebrated the involvement of all the girls and all they have contributed to the project.  With us were the extraordinary Caitlin Smith and Evie Martin who now facilitate our Satellite Sessions and have started their own inspiring campaign, Park Life.

We can’t wait to show some of the performances from the night, but let’s begin by sharing Anya Arnold’s fantastic photography. She did an incredible job of capturing the magic of the performances – thank you Anya!

Watch Hope’s beautiful performance of her original song, Just Me.
